York Labour MP calls for more action over city flooding

On the day all eyes are on the level of the River Ouse in York following Storm Dennis, Labour MP Rachael Maskell has called for improved flood defences for the city.

Flooded River Ouse in York

Ms Maskell says: "There's a lot of frustration felt. There's been a lot of talk and lots of surveys done, but we need action.

"Certainly I'll be pushing the government when Parliament returns to get on and get proposed schemes in place.

"In the Clemonthorpe area of York, we should have a barrier across the road not sandbags. But also further down the river, individual properties need that resilience so they don't flood."

There are currently 10 flood warnings in place for York and the surrounding area following Storm Dennis.
